Cannabis and other Street Drugs

THE BIG THREE: OPIOIDS, ALCOHOL, AND MARIJUANA AND THEIR IMPACT ON YOU, YOUR FAMILY, AND YOUR DENTAL PRACTICE!

The first half of the presentation will include a discussion of the addictive nature, abuse, and medicinal benefits of opioids and alcohol. For centuries opioids have been used to control pain and suffering, but at what cost to us, our families, and our dental practices? This section will uncover fascinating details regarding the origins and influence of alcohol and opioids and their significant effect on our society today. Proper use of the opioids in the dental practice will be included.

The second half of the day will be devoted to marijuana. Thirty-two states have legalized marijuana for medical use. Nine states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana for recreational purposes. Inevitably, some of these marijuana users will be treated by the dentist or hygienist. What is it? Does it have any medicinal use? Are there any drug interactions between marijuana and dental drugs? What are the oral effects of marijuana? Is marijuana addicting? What are the effects of marijuana on the dentition? What are the effects of marijuana on intellectual development? What are “shatter”, “wax”, “dab” or “scat” and how do they differ? Is edible marijuana as effective as smoking or vaping? The afternoon presentation will discuss some of the concerns about marijuana use/abuse, and its bearing on dental treatment.

You Will Learn:

• the difference between the synthetic and natural forms of “the big three”
• how these drugs have been useful in the past but are abused today
• the medicinal and recreational effects of these drugs on the body systems
• the physical characteristics of marijuana
• the evidence supporting medicinal uses
• differences among edible, vaping, and smoking marijuana
• the meaning of shatter, dab, wax, and scat
