Dr. Kenneth Hargreaves

Dr. Hargreaves is currently professor and chair of the department of endodontics, and professor in the departments of pharmacology, physiology and surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

He received his D.D.S. degree from Georgetown University School of Dentistry, Ph.D. in physiology from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., and Certificate in Endodontics from the University of Minnesota, where he served as an associate professor of endodontics and pharmacology for seven years, and maintained a private practice limited to endodontics. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics.

He was a senior staff fellow at the Pain Clinic of the Neurobiology and Anesthesiology Branch of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research/National Institutes of Health for five years, and later served as associate professor of endodontics and pharmacology at the University of Minnesota for seven years. In 1997, he joined the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio as professor and chair of the department of endodontics with a joint position in the departments of pharmacology, physiology and surgery.

His area of research focuses on the pharmacology of pain and inflammation. The research approach of Dr. Hargreaves and his colleagues include clinical trials, animal studies and in vitro tissue studies. He has received the National Institutes of Health Method to Extend Research in Time Award for pain research, and two International Association for Dental Research Distinguished Scientist Awards—for pulp biology in 1999, and pharmacology, toxicology and therapeutics in 2000. He has published more than 100 articles. He co-edited Seltzer and Bender’s Dental Pulp with Dr. Harold E. Goodis, and the ninth edition of Pathways of the Pulp with Drs. Stephen Cohen and Karl Keiser
